HSC Property Labelling

Coordinator: Dean Nessen

HSCPropertyID@graystonehsc.org

For years the Home & School Club has been purchasing supplies and equipment for our students to use at Graystone.  What we haven't done is label all of our property.  This year we want to get everything labelled that we own.  Dean Nessen is heading up this effort but he needs our help.  If you have been at Graystone for a while and can help Dean identify what property is ours (TVs, ELMOs, tables, computers, etc.) or want to help him when it is time to label everything with a HSC tag please send Dean an email at HSCPropertyID@graystonehsc.org.

heritageday@graystonehsc.org

Heritage Day is Graystone's annual cultural fair where parents and their children volunteer to set up booths celebrating their heritage. All Graystone students and their families are encouraged to participate! Students can perform songs, dances, music, and tales from their culture, and also taste foods from various countries around the world.

Participating Heritages

Each year we want to have as many booths representing as many countries as possible. We typically have people coordinating and setting up booths for China, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Korea, Panama, Sweden, Taiwan, Turkey, USA, and Vietnam.

If you are interested in coordinating a booth, please contact heritageday@graystonehsc.org or download a Participation/Volunteer form and return it to your child's teacher.

Please click HERE to download a form to have your child participate.

Pumpkin Bust

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Co-coordinators: Sandi Geringer and Katrina Healy

pumpkinbust@graystonehsc.org

The Pumpkin Bust is Graystone's version of the old days school fair.  During school hours the kids participate in a costume parade, at night families come out for an old fashioned school fair.  Come dressed in your costumes if you want.  The ever popular Cake Walk features baked goods provided by our Kindergarten and first grade families (or anyone else who wants to donate).  Classic school fair games such as frisbee and football tosses, basketball bowling, toss across, and many more requre only a couple of tickets to play,  Come play a little BINGO in the Bingo room.  One of our most popular booths/games is the coin toss.  Get a coin to land on a plate and win one of the many donated, stuffed animals.

Volunteers are who make the Pumpkin Bust a success and there are many different ways you can help.  Don't worry, you don't have to be a committee chairperson and spend many hours to be a volunteer.  As a matter of fact, most of the volunteer help is easy and only takes an hour of your time while at the Pumpkin Bust.

Sports Day

Sports_Day.pngThursday & Friday, May 24th & 25th, 2012

Coordinator(s): Elise Newton & Dean Nessen

sportsday@graystonehsc.org

Sport's Day is a two-day event that is held at the end of the school year. One day is designated for the 1st-3rd grade students and the second day is the for the 4th-5th graders. The event lasts 3 hours and consists of ten relay/game stations for the students to rotate through. The students are broken into ten groups of approximately 35-40 students per group and they spend approximately ten minutes at each station. In 2010, the stations consisted of: bucket brigade relay, sponge relay, scoop ball toss, parachute volley, basketball, baton relay, frisbee toss, potato sack races, tug of war, and football.

This event is typically held the Thursday and Friday prior to the last day of school. The students enjoy participating and especially enjoy the water activities.

Become a Parent Volunteer

This is one of the most fun and easiest events to help out at.  The kids are all excited to be out on the field and blacktop for a fun day of play.  All the events are set up and ready to go.  All the parent volunteers do is help the kids have fun.
Parent volunteers are responsible for the following items:
  1. Sign-up online via i-volunteeronline.com (this will be set up closer to the event -- if you want to volunteer now send email to sportsday@graystonehsc.org) or the flyer sent home.
  2. Arrive 15 minutes early the day of the event to read over the directions for their station's activity.
  3. Work with one or two other parents to facilitate the activity at their station. This includes explaining the directions, starting the activity, keep students participating, and facilitate the rotation to the next station.

Gardening & Beautification

gardening.png

Coordinator: Kimy Martinez-Kovac

gardening@graystonehsc.org

The gardening and beautification program at Graystone is a great way for students and parents to get involved with Graystone.  Graystone Garden is open to everyone. We meet every third Tuesday of the month. It's a program supported by the H&SC to educate children about nutrition, eco-life, self-sustaining farming, recycling, worm composting and gardening. We meet in the garden next to the science lab. We will be planting, harvesting, having visits from community leaders and sometimes have meet-ups at local organic farms.

We donate most of our proceeds to Second Harvest Food Bank. Kids, also, get to enjoy what they have planted. Hope you can join us on any third Tuesday, 1:30pm.  This program not only teaches students how to grow a garden, but also teaches about giving back to the community and taking care of the earth.

Get Involved

The program is always looking for parent/adult volunteers. If you have any questions or would like to participate as a volunteer please contact Kimy by phone (268-3187) or email (gardening@graystonehsc.org).

Spirit Shop

Co-coordinators: Angie Stanton & Connie Chen

spiritshop@graystonehsc.org

My name is Angie Stanton and my cochair is Connie Chen. We run the spirit shop. The Spirit Shop is the place to get all your Graystone paraphernalia. At the spirit shop we sell Graystone t-shirts, pencils, sweatshirts, book bags, pins, erasers, bracelets, and more; all with the Graystone logo on it. Weather permitting, we have the Spirit Shop open once a month out on the black top right after the end of the school day.

The Spirit Shop is important because it helps teach students the value of money and promotes school and community pride.  Many students save their money to bring and buy gear or candy or fun graystone school supplies, knowing they are contributing to their school and education.

They are proud to be Graystone students.  Stop by and see what we have to offer you.
